4 Days Samburu Fly Package: Highlights
Samburu offers great wildlife viewing and four of the Big Five are present. Rhinos are absent, but big herds of elephant cross the reserve. Of the big cats, leopards are very rewarding with some habituated individuals giving high-quality sightings. Most interesting are the northern Kenya specials including beisa oryx, lesser kudu, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and the odd-looking gerenuk.
Days 1-3: Samburu National Reserve
Pick up from your hotel, transfer to the Wilson Airport for your schedule flight to Samburu national reserve. On arrival you will be met and assisted to check in at Larsens Camp. Larsens Tented Camp staff strikes the perfect combination of attentive service and genuine warmth, so you feel as comfortable and relaxed as if you were at home. One excellent example of this is the Samburu warrior who stands at attention in the dining tent, carrying a traditional slingshot and threatening bold monkeys with it whenever they approach, eyeing a bowl of fruit. Grumbling, the monkey dashes away to collect his own lunch, and the warrior breaks into a sweet grin, accompanied by cheers from guests. You’ll adore the kind and charming staff so much you’ll hardly want to leave.
Samburu National Reserve is an arid, wild and little-visited region, well known for its spectacular scenery and wildlife not found in the south: the elegant reticulated giraffe, the rare Grevy’s zebra with its large furry ears, the gerenuk antelope that stands on its hind legs to feed, and Somali ostriches with their distinctive blue legs. You may also see elephant, cheetah, leopard, eland, oryx, impala, dik dik, waterbuck, birds… all cavorting on the red and green earth, beneath the lapis sky.
This vast expanse of remote pristine wilderness is inhabited by iconic wildlife and a tranquil ambiance blankets this wildlife haven. Located in the North of Laikipia, one of the less-visited regions in Kenya, this reserve promises an authentic wilderness experience. The traditional homeland of the Samburu people, this arid terrain features northern Kenya’s biggest river, Ewaso Nyiro. Quenching the thirst of the abundant wildlife that roam this reserve, the Samburu people were lured to this area due to the reliability of the Ewaso Nyiro that provides water for their herds. The river courses through Samburu National Park, Shaba National Reserve and the Buffalo Springs National Reserve to the south.
Day 4: Departure, Transfer Nairobi
After a wholesome breakfast, you will be driven to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to the Wilson airport in Nairobi. depending on your international flight, you have the option to do a lunch at the carnivore restaurant (extra cost) - an experience we highly recommend! The Carnivore restaurant is always a beast of a feast since 1980 - Meats are roasted on traditional maasai swords over a huge charcoal pit that dominates the restaurant's entrance. The rough-hewn beams combine the rustic feel of a rural setting with that of a medieval banqueting hall.
The Carnivore doesn't conform to the familiar restaurant traditions. First, the soup of the day along with a plate of home baked bworn bread and butter are served. Then, an army of carvers move table to table, swords laden carving juicy cuts onto sizzling cast-iron plates. Accompanying the meat feast is a selection of salads, vegetable side dishes and sauces
The feeding frenzy doesn't stop until you declare defeat by lowering the white paper flag perched atop the central tray. This is then followed by dessert and coffee. The full meal including the soup course is at a set price. A vegetarian menu is also offered.
You will be dropped at the Jomo Kenyatta international airport for your onward flight.
